Meet Nilah

My passion for baking ignited much like many others do. It started with me following my mom around the kitchen and asking to help, which turned into cupcakes for my classmates, cookies for our neighbors, and cheesecakes for family gatherings. Among my friends and family, I became well-known for seasonal baked goods and bringing festive treats to parties. Back in September of 2023, after coming off a serious baking stint for my best friend’s baby shower, someone at work asked me if I knew anyone in the area who could make gluten-free, soy-free, and dairy-free cupcakes. I didn’t, but I was up to the challenge. I did some research, pieced together a recipe, and baked enough for everyone in my office with plenty to give to my first client. A day later, I received a call from him and he handed the phone to his sister to thank me for the strawberry cupcakes. She told me she’d just got out of the hospital and hadn’t been able to have anything sweet in almost six months because of her health issues. My cupcakes were not only a welcome treat, but a touching surprise. The joy I felt in being able to give someone something special they could enjoy despite their food sensitivities was unmatched. The fulfillment I experienced in the work was even better and Honeybee Baking was born.
In the fall of 2024, during my first year in business, I signed up for the Greatest Baker competition. I didn't think I'd be chosen, much less win, but I kept saying, "You don't know if you don't try." Not only was I selected, but I somehow made it to the quarterfinals. A few weeks later, I got a call in notifying me that I won the spot for critic's pick for the entire competition. In March of 2025, I got to meet and bake for Bake from Scratch magazine's critic, Brian Hart Hoffman and his crew. Along with the other talented runner-ups and winner, we raised over one million dollars for the B+ Foundation to aid families financially with children who are struggling with severe illnesses. It was an honor to have my gluten-free Black Forest cake featured in this reputable baking magazine, but also to make new friends and be a force for good change in the world.
Baking is a labor of love for me and I’m committed to sharing that with my customers so that everyone can break bread and experience something sweet. Food is a universal staple that brings people together and I hope that I can contribute to our wonderful creative community with mine. I'm excited to use my culturally mixed Italian, Irish, and Salvadoran background to bring different and flavorful bakes to everyone. Thank you for reading this and I hope you’ll become a lover of the hive!
